Hurricane Joaquin Mission
In 2015, South Carolina State Guard’s commander, MG (SC) Thomas S. Mullikin, actively participated with the National Guard contingent in the planning and execution of disaster relief operations during the recent Hurricane Joaquin event.
In this statewide emergency the volunteer professionals of the South Carolina State Guard were deployed and served across the state. There were more than 300 State Guard members, from all three battalions, brigade, and division, providing shelter security, point of distribution of food and water, engineering assessments in Newberry, manning the state Emergency Operations Center in Columbia, filling sandbags and swift water rescue in the Low Country. They provided strategic planning, augmented law enforcement, and provided engineering assistance – all at no cost to the state of SC.
